Most international flights land in Beijing, so it makes perfect sense to start your journey here. As China’s capital, Beijing lets you witness two sides of this country: the ancient China you imagine from books and films, and the fast‑paced, modern China of today. From Beijing, you can easily fly or take high‑speed trains to almost every major city across the nation.
In this blog post, I want to share a classic route covering Southwest‑Central China: Chongqing → Chengdu → Jiuzhaigou → Zhangjiajie. You can fly back home from either Beijing or Shanghai at the end of your trip.
This single route packs so many of China’s greatest highlights.
Chongqing: The cyber‑punk mountain city built on steep hills. Wander its layered streets, ride cable cars over the Yangtze River, and try fiery local hot‑pot.
Zhangjiajie: Home to the surreal sandstone peaks that inspired the floating Hallelujah Mountains in the movie Avatar. Towering stone pillars rise out of sea of clouds, one of the most breathtaking mountain landscapes on Earth.
Jiuzhaigou: Famous for crystal‑clear, multi‑colored lakes and waterfalls. Many travelers call it the most beautiful water scenery in China.
Chengdu: Slow‑paced, warm‑hearted and full of local charm. Here you can meet giant pandas, watch Sichuan opera face‑changing shows, sit in old tea houses, and even watch locals play mahjong, a beloved national pastime.
Sit down for a cup of tea and observe daily life in Chengdu. It gives you a real taste of ordinary Chinese people’s rhythm of life.
One thing surprises many visitors: life in China varies greatly from region to region. Food, customs, lifestyles, even local personalities change a lot as you travel from north to south, east to west.
You can never truly understand China only by visiting one single city. Only by traveling across different corners of this vast land can you feel its real depth and diversity.
